Jess Ofelia Sandoval-Artist
Jess Ofelia Sandoval, born in Compton and raised in Southeast Los Angeles, is a first-generation Californian with deep working-class roots. She has built a diverse career as a nature-based educator, teaching artist, and gardener, blending her creative passions with a commitment to community and education.
She has an educational background in Fashion Design (AA) and Early Childhood Education (BA). A Community Teaching Artist certificate from a professional-oriented program developed in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and California State University, Los Angeles.
Jess discovered a love for painting and textiles as a child in school and local public libraries. Self-taught. She began making artwork in later adulthood. Her artwork focuses on California landscapes, waterscapes, and intimate portraits from memories: past and present.
Learning by Doing began to be pieced together after the beginning of the covid pandemic in 2021. Like many people all over the world in isolation; a love for nature was acknowledged. The conception was a personal need to rediscover the innate inner child in order to find healing after personal turmoil. In this discovery, the philosophy and art concepts became connected to nature in an urban environment.
